I have never really made the effort to stream movies onto my iPad. The reason is that I only get the time to watch movies when I am travelling and I’ll take the time to upload my movies pre-flight.
However I have recently bought a new VPN router that supports a USB network drive. A network drive attached to a router simply means that your router acts as the computer and thus no computer needs to be switched on for you to access the DRIVE and its content. I put an old portable drive in and enabled file sharing via USB on the router and voila! Network drive enabled!
With a network drive enabled, I can now stream movies/music from any device that is connected to my home network. My search to stream movies onto my iPad pointed me to FileBrowser. As its rather simple name suggests, Filebrowser allows you to view files over several platforms, a more in depth description follows:
FileBrowser is like having Windows Explorer or Mac Finder on your iPad / iPhone to access, copy and stream files from remote computers including Windows, Mac, and Network (NAS) drives.
You can browse machines on your WiFi network and view documents, photos or stream movies directly to the iPad / iPhone. You can also sync them through iTunes. Transferred files can be stored within FileBrowser to take with you.
And why would anyone want to stream files you may ask? Well, due to the memory limitations of the ipad/iPhone and the bulkiness of the laptop, steaming your movies off a 1 TB (or higher) Hard Disk gives you the option of watching an unlimited amount of movies anywhere within your home network.

Filebrowser is simply more than a file browser as it streams your content rather seamlessly. Connecting to your computer or Network Accessible Storage (NAS) device, or Airport Extreme Base Station (with contents) over WiFi or 3G using the SMB file transfer protocol, which means no third party software is needed.
FileBrowser does not auto detect a network so there is tad bit of work here in setting it up. Under location just select the address which you want to connect to:
For NAS on my router
I specified my Routers IP address (i.e. 192.168.0.1) along with the username and password (which are all provided with your routers documentation)
Other Computer’s shared content
You can add a new computer by typing “username.local” in the “Name or Address” field — where “username” is the actual name you chose for your Mac’s Home folder. With the same .local domain, FileBrowser can connect to an AirPort Extreme station (and thus open the contents of a shared drive) or recognize the folders you’ve decided to share (besides Home) in your Mac’s System Preferences.

For you to stream a movie directly to FileBrowser you must make sure that the movie’s format is in a format that can be played on the iPad. This means converting it to an MP4 or H264 format – I use a program called Xilisoft HD video converter for this.
You generally hit and miss while downloading apps that fulfill your needs. FileBrowser did what it intended to do and proved pretty reliable. It was relatively easy to setup with loads of instructions and help files in case you lost your way. Filebrowser is a Universal App available on the App Store ($ 4.99).

Sidney (BC), Canada – Corporate Smalltalk Consulting Ltd has announced Well Logs 1.8.9 for iPad, an update to their unique app for the petroleum industry that enables viewing of extremely large Well and Mud Logs in either PDF or TIFF formats. Capable of displaying documents as big as 11 inches by 100 feet at 230 dpi, the app relies upon proprietary technology from its LargeViewer app to import, store, pre-render, tile, scale, and scroll very large images on any iOS device, there is no reliance on backend services or internet access required for viewing your well log.
Well Logs is the only iOS app on the market to have the capabilities to load and view oil & gas wireline well log TIFF and/or PDF images. With wireline well files up to dozens of feet long, most apps do not have the capacity to allow such images to load without crashing. Well Logs has made it a priority to specifically handle such unwieldy files. Of course, the advantages of viewing well logs that are 17 inches x 65 feet, or land maps that are 4 x 18 feet on an iPad rather than a paper document are significant. On-site viewing and discussion of paper documents no longer presents the inconvenience it once was, plus this reduces costs associated with the original printing process as paper and ink are costly items.
Well logging, also known as borehole logging, is the practice of making a detailed record (a well log) of the geologic formations penetrated by a borehole. The log may be based either on visual inspection of samples brought to the surface (geological logs) or on physical measurements made by instruments lowered into the hole (geophysical logs). Well logging is done during all phases of a well’s development: drilling, completing, producing, and abandoning. Well logging is commonly used to document the presence of oil and gas, groundwater, minerals, and geothermal sources, as well as during the process of conducting environmental and geotechnical studies.
Feature Highlights:
* Designed especially for the petroleum industry to view large Well and Mud Logs on iPad
* Capable of displaying documents as big as 11 x 770 inches at 230 dpi
* Uses LargeViewer technology to import, store, pre-render, tile, scale, and scroll very large images on any iOS device
* Handles Land Map files 4 x 18 feet (or larger)
* 8x zoom, horizontal & vertical scrolling
* Advanced memory management permits display of images over 640 megapixels in size
* Pre-rendering allows smooth scrolling and display
* Cached Dropbox support.
* Accelerated multi-page PDF & TIFF fax file reading for support faxes and PDF documentation
* Supports more than 35 different graphics file formats
In addition to well logs, the app also provides accelerated multi-page PDF & TIFF fax file reading, plus compatibility with all of the image formats supported by Corporate Smalltalk Consulting Ltd’s LargeViewer technology: AVS, BMP, CUR, DIB, FITS, GIF, ICON, JNG, JP2, JPEC, JPEG, JPG, MAT, MIFF, MTV, MVG, PBM, PCX, PGM, PICT, PIX, PNG, PNG8, PNG24, PNG32, PNM, PPM, RLE, SGI, TGA, TIFF, TIF, TIM, VIFF, WBMP, WPG, SBM, and XPM.
“I know of no other iOS app that can successfully manage the strenuous demands that are made on mobile devices in displaying well logs and mud logs,” commented company Founder John McIntosh. “If you are involved in borehole logging of any kind, Well Logs is a must-have app.”
Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
* iOS 5 ready
* 9.7 MB

For most Mac users, hot keys are an absolute life-saver. They save time and allow quick and easy access to OS X functions without having to hunt through endless menus and folders. But unconfirmed rumours that sprung up on Friday of this week show that Apple are apparently ditching hot keys from all the programs sold on the App Store starting June 1st as a “security measure”.
Apple have been pushing developers to sandbox their apps by June 1st
The move is nothing new. Since last year, Apple has been pushing for developers to sandbox their apps, meaning that they cannot mess around with the operating system or other apps installed on the device, however it seems like the latest policy will force many developers to redesign their apps to take out hot key integration. Alfred is a prime example of one of these, which uses simple keyboard shortcuts to launch Mac applications and saved documents.
Alfred may be one of the apps affected by the possible hot key change
Currently, developers are allowed to implement hot key integration into their apps in order to launch system-wide shortcuts such as bringing all windows into the foreground or launching the user’s most-used apps all at once, but any apps submitted to the App Store after June 1st will have to remove this feature.
The move may be a nod towards tighter security in the upcoming Mountain Lion release. There has been recent strong criticism of OS X security (especially given the Flashback trojan) and the upcoming Gatekeeper feature in OS X 10.8 is Apple’s attempt to try and make its default operating system even safer. However, some commentators have said that OS X is turning more into iOS in this aspect, with tight controls on what is permitted and a long list of guidelines that developers have to adhere to.
We will, of course, keep you updated on what is happening with this story. In the meantime, feel free to share your comments, thoughts and complaints in the section below!
Sidney (BC) Canada – Corporate Smalltalk Consulting has announced Maps 1.8.9 for iPad, an update to their Navigation app that provides an advanced document viewer that accommodates highly detailed documents at high magnifications. Maps with its proprietary LargeViewer technology allows rapid scrolling and minimal drawing lag times for large charts and massive PDF documents.
Ordinary iPad document viewers slow to a crawl or simply crash and scrolling is extremely difficult when working with large maps or completely give up when dealing with wall maps. Maps has been specifically designed to provide effortless, real-time scrolling both horizontally and vertically, and quick zooms in and out. The app features TIFF, PDF, and Dropbox download compatibility, quick-view thumbnails, multi-tasking support, and either iOS and/or OS X based pre-rendering.
Employing accelerated PDF viewing logic, combined with CSC’s newest TIFF decoder, it facilitates the pre-rendering of files into LargeViewer format. All pre-rendering need be done only once; thereafter, converted files may be opened and viewed easily. While pre-rendering can be done within the app, CSC recommends their free, Mac OS X LargeViewer Helper for batch pre-rendering. Pre-rendering is done at 2x, but users can render finely detailed charts at 5x, enabling instant zooming in at 40x magnification.
Feature Highlights:
* Innovative document viewer accommodates highly detailed maps
* Maps allows display of image documents up to wall size posters
* Reads over 50 different image file formats, and many MS office formats
* Displays and paginates large PDF files, up to thousands of pages
* Support for TIFF/FAX files with variable page sizes
* Dropbox file download compatibility
* Acts like a USB memory stick
* Responsive H/V scrolling and zooming through large documents
* Sophisticated Cache Manager allows user control of cached Dropbox files
* Supports multi-tasking, allowing pre-processing to be done in the background
* Improved logic for dealing with multi-page PDF books
A major convenience feature of Maps is its Dropbox compatibility. The app has read-only Dropbox capability; it will never change or delete a Dropbox stored file. In addition, the app provides a sophisticated Cache Manager. This gives users complete control over files that have been stored in cache memory, allowing mirroring and later use of the Dropbox folder, even when there is no Internet connectivity.
Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
* iOS 5.0 or later
* 13.1 MB
